Hi all,

This is an invitation to all VanBelle men out there to help me explore our deeper ancestry. Via the lab run by GeneBase (www.genebase.com) I've sequenced the special DNA markers on my Y chromosome. Like the Van Belle surname, this chromosome is passed from father to son, and so it can be used to track the ancestry of the name Van Belle, perhaps farther back than could be achieved by searching the records.

If any of you are interested in DNA Geneology, or have already done the tests yourself, I'm interested in hearing from you to compare notes. I've been keeping track of everything I've learned in a spreadsheet at http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=riBa2sbfiNrfo0l6RL8V4Lg&hl=en.

Biography : Opa Van Belle as told by Harry Van Belle, his son.

This story is written by me. If it were written by one of my siblings it would be a different story. We can only remember what we experience and we can only write what we remember. Each of us remembers Dad in his/her own way.

Harry Van Belle | (Edmonton, Alberta)

Note : This is the short version, a longer version to be added at a later date.

First, some statistics : Oenes Christoffel van Belle was born on Oct. 7,1898 to Arie van Belle, who was the oldest son of Jan van Belle and to Pietertje Cornelia Vermaat. In 1930, he married Emma Wilhelmina van Delft. They had 7 children : Albert (born in 1931), Pieterje(Susan)(1932), Nellie(1934), Arie(Harry)(1937), Cornelius (Kees) (1939, died in 1940), Jacoba (Carol)(1942), and Emma (1947). Dad died on Dec 29, 1971 at the age of 73.

He lived in 2 countries and 5 places during his lifetime : in Goudswaard and Rijnsburg, Zuid Holland, The Netherlands, and in Newtonville, Kirby and Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. He lived an eventful life. He experienced Word War I when he was teenager, the Great Depression when he just married, World War II when he just started a business, and immigration at age 53, when he was well into middle-age.

During his lifetime he also experienced many technological changes : the introduction of the bicycle, the automobile, the telephone, the radio, electricity, vaccuum cleaners, toasters, electric kettles, electric stoves, refridgerators, washers and dryers, central heating, record players, tape recorders, television, air travel and the atom bomb.

He was a Christian and a member of a church all his life. He was baptized in the Oud-Gereformeerde Kerk, did his confession of faith in the Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk, and in Canada belonged to the Christian Reformed Church.

One could call him a self employed business man. For most of his life he was a merchant, a wholesale/retailer dealer, first in flowers and later in fruits and vegetables. After he immigrated to Canada he was a (rather unsuccessful) farmer and a market gardener for a while, but during the last decade of his life he returned to what he did so well the vending of fruits and vegetables.

The Name Van Belle

Do you know where our last name comes from? A small Flemish town where the inhabitants were both of Dutch and French origins. Hence each town had a double name - one of the Netherlands/Flemish language and one of the French launguage. For example, Belle and Bailleul, Edingen and Enghien, and Tweebeek and Tubise. "Van" or "from" Belle is how our last name came to be.

As with much of history this fact has been disputed, in fact by our own Professor and my Uncle Harry Van Belle who's research on our family tree found the town to be in Northern France. My facts came from internet research was different but both equally interesting.

Our relatives came from all sorts of different backgrounds, lived in a variety of homes and ran many different businesses. If you think you know everything there is to know about our history we might uncover a few facts which will surprize you.
